Why They Call it “Florida”

Undoubtedly, the best part of attending college in Florida is the early spring. Except for rare Attacks of the Three-Inch Snowmen, Pensacola's winter usually consists of light-jacket weather. PCC students can expect to see springtime while parts of the north anticipate blizzards, regardless of what any groundhog has to say. Flowers cover campus more quickly than they do in northern climates, making it quite obvious why Ponce de León called this place Florida.

When You Don’t Succeed

Three days after I arrived on the campus of PCC for my very first semester, I donned my trusty maroon volleyball shoes, grabbed my smelly kneepads, and nervously made my way to the Arlin R. Horton Sports Center. Many other freshman girls and I had been eagerly anticipating this day: Lady Eagles volleyball tryouts. Designed specifically for incoming freshmen and transfer students, fall tryouts are held for one day at the beginning of the semester. With about fifty other girls trying out, I had no idea how I would fare. Throughout the day, several cuts were made until the newest members of the Lady Eagles volleyball team emerged.

From Camper to College Student

Several years ago, I was just one of thousands of high school students who came for one of Youth Outreach Ministry's summer camps, held on PCC's campus. The summer before 10th grade, I attended the Drama Camp and got to participate in the big music and drama gala at the end of the week.  Although Drama Camp was fun and exciting, history was still my biggest interest, and the following two years, I attended the History and Political Science Camp.
