Biscuits and Quilts

It's a new year and a new semester. And generally, a new year brings New Year's resolutions. I, however, seem to have a certain phobia of making goals for a new year. You know those people who don't make New Year's resolutions for fear of not succeeding? I am a classic example of such a person.

Last year though, I decided to actually set some goals. I thought of things I wanted to accomplish, sorted through those ideas to eliminate the unfeasible ones, and finally ended up with two goals. Now I put much thought into these two goals, but it seemed that whenever I told anyone what they were, the person always laughed at me. You see, I decided that I wanted to make a quilt and learn how to make biscuits from scratch. These might not seem very difficult at all to some, but I am not exactly proficient in the domestic arts.

So over the summer, with much help from my very patient mother, I made several fine batches of biscuits and completed my first (and probably only) quilt. Even though the goals I set didn't change the world, I did feel rather accomplished when I completed them.

So as we finish up the first week of our new semester, I would like to encourage you to make some goals. It doesn't matter if they're academic, spiritual, social, or physical. Just set a goal and stick with it! Make this semester one that you will be proud to look back on.
