Palm Trees—Palm Trees Everywhere!

And I'm not exaggerating when I say that.  When you look around campus and even inside the Commons and the Crowne Centre, you'll see palm trees planted all over the place.  We have the Palms Grille in the Commons, and even our library search system is strategically named PALM (Patron Access to Library Materials).

You must be thinking, "Well, you are in Florida, and in a beach city nonetheless! Of course you'd have palm trees everywhere on campus!"

That's what most people think, but let me dispel the myth and present the story of the college palm tree symbolism.  Our founders, Dr. and Mrs. Horton, chose the palm tree as our college logo to reflect Psalm 92:12, "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon."  Well, they couldn't just get cedars of Lebanon and put them all around campus, but the palm tree was perfect for not only the Florida atmosphere but also the biblical symbolism.  The trees symbolize the College's desire to train students to grow in righteousness before the Lord.

So the next time you pass one of the palm trees, remember that they're not just tropical decorations.  They're a daily reminder of what we ought to be: Christians who stand tall for the right in everything we do.
