What Will You Be When You Grow Up?

People always asked when we were little, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Now that we're not little kids any more, I have an answer, and I hope you have an answer for yourself as well.

There are a lot of important decisions to make in life, and picking a good career path is one of them. If you're stressing out because you don't know yet, I have some advice for you:

Take it one step at a time.

It's simple but so true. We can't see what's down the road, but God can. Whether you are preparing to go to college or you still haven't made a choice, it's all right. Just take the first step. Being in college sometimes helps to give a clearer vision of what field of study to pursue. Taking classes, getting to know teachers, studying, working on projects, and having hands-on experiences in your classes and in internship opportunities (depending on your major) will help you decide if the program is the right one for you. I have many friends who changed majors in college--some more than others! It is an important decision, and just because you pick one field of study, that doesn't mean you are stuck there.

For me, special speakers in my program have given insight and helped me visualize what type of work I could do in the future. As a student in the Criminal Justice program, I have had the opportunity to listen not only to wonderful, sound teaching in my classes, but also to special guest speakers who specialize in particular CJ fields. We have seminars in which these speakers come from all over the country to help us look into what it would be like to do their jobs someday. I have been privileged to listen to special agents, crime scene specialists, police officers, and many others who come in and share their passion with us. I have a better understanding of so many different areas because of them.

It's not only Criminal Justice students that get to hear from specialists like these, but other majors also get great insight from the speakers that come in and share their passion with others. It's all a learning experience. You're guaranteed to learn something new and useful that helps to equip you for your future.

I hope you come to college and have the chance to experience all that I have experienced and learned. College will help you gain the confidence to tackle your future as a grown up. Even if you're not sure about what to study, trust in the Lord, and He will direct your path.
