“What Do YOU Do?”
So there I was, minding my own business, waiting for my team member in the hallway of the Campus House. As I marked the latest room off our list, I noticed a little 5- or 6-year-old girl watching me. Her big beautiful brown eyes were giving my worn blue smock a once-over with a confused face.
“So what do you do?” she asked, crossing her arms over her glitter-adorned princess sweatshirt.
“Well, I am a maid; I clean rooms all day,” I responded.
Those beautiful eyes of hers became huge circles and her face a picture of pure horror. She took a couple steps closer to me, stared up at my face, and whispered, “Did you get in trouble, too?”
This innocent question by a curious little girl absolutely made my day! Through the eyes of a child, cleaning rooms can seem like a punishment, but to me, my job at Campus House is a great opportunity. Sometimes it can be a challenge to want to clock in every day knowing that you have homework due, a paper to write, or a myriad of other things on your mind. I know that so often I fall into this category, so I wanted to encourage those of you who may be struggling with the same thing.
Work is a blessing. Yes, a blessing. Last semester, my work shift was early in the morning, and I struggled finding joy in waking up early every day until my mother helped me to realize something. God had placed me in the exact location where He wanted me to be, He had a specific reason for my being there, and I needed to rely on Him to show me His reason. He definitely showed me that reason, and I actually grew to enjoy my job. This semester has been the same way, and I love working at Campus House with all the great co-workers He has given me.
Before you pray and ask God to give you a love for your job, thank Him for the opportunity He has given you. As part of the Work Assistance program here at PCC, we are truly blessed to have a way to work our way through school—be sure to thank the Lord for this opportunity. 🙂 Your job may not be glamorous or exciting, but God has a sure plan for you. Trust Him! Before you go to work tomorrow, ask yourself, “What do you do?”
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.” (Col. 3:23)
