What Are You Worth?

Recently, my roommates and I have been reading through 1 Corinthians 13. We study a verse each night before bed, dissect what it means, and then think of how to apply that to our daily lives the following day. We were on our third day of doing this when Pastor McBride got up in chapel and presented us with a challenging message taken from 1 Corinthians 12 – 13. I was excited, to say the least, when he told us to turn to those chapters. As he preached, each verse seemed so alive, having still been fresh in my mind from Bible study. It was not until he reached verse two of chapter thirteen that I really began to become convicted.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

Without charity, I am nothing. That’s a pretty powerful and humbling thought. As he preached, I began to question to myself, what would I be worth if I were measured by charity? The verse says that if I don’t have charity, I am nothing. It hurt a little bit to think about. Honestly, do I really and truly show love to those around me? Do I show that girl on the elevator godly charity? How about that guy behind me in history? Oh sure, I can say hi and be polite, but I’m pretty sure that’s not the kind of love this is talking about. Do I invest my time into them? Do I ask them how they're doing and really mean it? Do I question about their prayers needs? After all, it is those types of things that show true love.

The world around us often teaches us that our worth is found in clothes, or cars, or money; but that’s society’s way, not God's. God measures us by our faith and love, and if I want to be worth anything, I had better invest in the things that matter most to God. Oh sure, I’d do all right if I were measured by the world's standards. I’m always fed and well clothed, but what if I were measured by a much higher standard, my charity? My love? How would I do then? Would I even be worth anything? Would you be worth anything?

Without charity, I am nothing; you are nothing. Go out, show some godly charity today, and let's make ourselves worth something today.
