The Choice Is Up to You

Nurses, doctors, teachers, engineers, secretaries–there are so many different professions that we could choose to be a part of for the rest of our lives. Here at PCC, we offer over 60 areas of study. It is hard to choose just one! Some people know exactly what they want to major in when they get here, like me. I was completely set on being a nursing student and working in a hospital one day. I started off my college years as a nursing student, and the nursing program here is amazing! I know because I’ve been through some of it. But in the middle of my sophomore year, I changed my major to Elementary Education. So why did I change? Because God led in my heart showing me that He wants me to be a teacher.

As an Elementary Education major here at PCC, I get to try so many new things. Now some of you who are looking into this major may be thinking, “There is no way I could ever be a teacher.” But you can if that is what God wants you to do, and the teachers here will train you to be an effective teacher. My favorite class this past semester was Materials and Methods. This course covers everything from making posters to learning about classroom discipline. We learn how to write our very first lesson plans. We also make teaching visuals that help to enhance learning in the classroom. (It’s kind of like a coloring project! It’s a lot of fun!) And it’s the first time that we actually get up in front of our class for a peer teaching. We pretend that our classmates are our future students. We even get to act like the students who don’t obey in the classroom so that the teacher knows how to handle those situations when they come up.

Teaching in front of your classmates is extremely nerve-racking, but it is so rewarding. Many students over the years have gone through this class and weren’t really sure if teaching was for them or not. Getting up in front of the class and teaching gives us an opportunity if to see if teaching is really something that we want to do for the rest of our lives. We start with all this to prepare ourselves for teaching students one day. Our goal as teachers is learning to teach in order to lead students to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Whether you are planning on being a teacher, a nurse, an author, a mechanical engineer, a missionary, or any other profession that you choose, I want to encourage you to seek God’s will for your life! It’s okay to change your major even after you get here. Hundreds of students change majors through their years at college. As long as you are following God’s will, just trust Him to lead you to the right career.
