Dish Busters

Maybe you have considered PCC's Work Assistance Program either as a prospective student, or as a current one. Pensacola Christian College currently has about 2000 students employed in their program, working an average of 11.5 hours a week and making an average of over $2,500 a year to be applied to their tuition.

I remember being really excited about what job I would end up with around campus. As I arrived for the first time on campus and opened my welcome packet with my job assignment, the possibilities raced through my mind. Will I work at a desk or on my feet? I wondered. Maybe I'll get to answer the phone for A Beka Book, or I'll serve iced coffees at the Palms Grille! Actually, I was assigned to dish room. Great. I was indignant. But...I'm so full of potential! Anywhere but there, Lord. I'll expand my horizons in other ways. I'll start my own home business crocheting pillowcases. I'll learn how to stand on my head and say the alphabet in Russian. Backwards. Just don't make me work in a cafeteria dish room.

Well, I worked in the dish room anyway. And I found, as we so often do when we surrender to the challenges the Lord allows in our lives, that the experience was very rewarding. That whole fall semester I scrubbed dishes three mornings a week. I learned that every job, even the ones that seem simple and insignificant, is absolutely vital to the bigger task at hand. I learned how to be patient and thoughtful of my coworkers when I only felt tired and grumpy. I learned that having a good time does not depend wholly on circumstances but on a good attitude. Also, I learned to be thankful for the people who were cleaning up my dishes when I wasn't in there!

I made some great friends in the dish room that semester, and I have many fond memories of scrubbing and singing and laughing from those mornings together. That spring, I became a cook. I still work in the kitchen today, and I still love it! I would recommend the Work Assistance program to anyone. It's a great environment to make some friends, have some good times, and learn a lot!

I'll expand my horizon in other ways. I'll start my own home business crocheting pillowcases. I'll learn how to stand on my head and say my alphabet in Russian.
