Visiting with Dr. Bucy

A favorite teacher of Bible and missions classes, Dr. Bucy is characterized by a love for people. He genuinely cares for his students and wants to see them influence their world for Christ. When I recently interviewed Dr. Bucy, he shared his vision for global missions.

1. How did you first get involved in missions?

The seeds were planted in the first year after my salvation, when I was a teenager. My pastor got [me] immediately involved helping with things such as promoting missions conferences. The Lord allowed me to have many mentors who were missions-minded. I worked at a Christian camp with missionaries: one on furlough from Thailand and another from Portugal.

I knew the Lord was directing me into full-time Christian service, but I thought it might be a type of Christian camp work. I was able to go to Mexico in the late 1980s, and there had a taste of cross-cultural work. Later, I found myself taking teams abroad. I did a cross-cultural internship in Germany and became involved with language school and church planting assistantship. I can see the providence of visiting many fields, rather than staying in one place long-term. This has helped me to be globally aware of missions needs.

2. How did God lead you to Pensacola Christian College?

In 1980 I first came here, knowing I needed further Bible training. I enrolled as a postgraduate student, taking a few undergraduate classes along with graduate Bible classes. I started working my way through graduate school by working in maintenance. A position opened up for part-time teaching, then eventually full-time teaching.

3. How long have you been on faculty at PCC?

I was considered faculty in 1983. I am finishing up 29 years here.

4. What is your goal in teaching?

My calling is to motivate and train others for global ministry. God is still a missionary God. If I can be a small link in the chain, by His grace, I'll keep doing that.

5. What is a memorable story from a class you taught?

I remember praying for a Chinese people group, the Popei, and telling my students that they were 100% unreached. After that, the Lord burdened a student's heart, and she is in Hainan, China, today.

Years ago, I had Sam Hodges in class. Later, I took teams to see him on the field as a veteran missionary in Honduras. It is a blessing to watch the student become the teacher. Seeing some of the fruit is a motivation to keep going.

6. Who are your favorite Christian heroes?

Adoniram Judson and David Livingstone

7. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I like to be outdoors, doing yard work around home. On vacations in Maine, I enjoy kayaking and wildlife photography.

8. What advice would you give someone who is interested in missions?

Stay in the Word and pray for missions. The Lord had one prayer request: "Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest." (Matthew 9:38) You may be the answer to the prayer.
