Autumn, Auditions, and Apple Crisp 2011
Things to Do

Autumn, Auditions, and Apple Crisp

The fall semester is underway!  It finally felt like fall with the cooler weather—and how many of you tried that apple crisp dessert in the Four Winds the other night? I mixed that with some vanilla ice cream…wow.  I felt like I was eating some of Mom’s homemade apple pie.

After an exciting week of opening activities, I now find myself plunged into classes, homework, and projects.  Double majoring has taught me that proper time management is a key to college success.  Managing your time wisely can be a delicate art—but if you learn how to do it effectively, you can take advantage of the many opportunities that Pensacola Christian College has to offer.

One of those opportunities is Fine Arts.  Every semester, the faculty and students at PCC team up to produce a play or musical.  These dramatic productions usually include singing, acting, and live orchestration.  Recently, PCC has performed Ruddigore, Cyrano de Bergerac, Our Town, and The Hiding Place. This fall’s production will be H.M.S. Pinafore.

When I heard that this semester’s production was going to be Pinafore, I decided to audition.  Auditioning for a play was something I always wanted to do since freshman year.  During my first two years at PCC, I was able to work the audio/sound systems for the various fine arts productions.  Working “behind the scenes” allowed me to see just how fun—and rewarding—these productions truly are.

It is hard to imagine just how much work goes into these productions.  Singing, acting, stage movements, set pieces, music, sound effects, lighting—all of these are intricate parts of any fine arts production.  Countless hours are spent preparing, practicing, and mastering each facet of the play, culminating in a final performance that students, faculty, and guests can all enjoy.

Since this was my first time auditioning for fine arts, I wasn’t exactly sure where to look for help.  If you would like to audition for fine arts (or any other productions at PCC), here is my advice to you:

  • Listen to chapel announcements.  Near the end of the semester, an announcement will usually be given in chapel concerning auditions for the following semester’s production.  If you miss the fall auditions for the spring performance, don’t worry! There are also opportunities to audition in the spring.
  • Audition—without fear!  I’ll be honest, I have little musical talent and my acting experience is very limited.  Going into the audition, I was not sure what to do or what to sing.  (After all, I have never really sung outside of church choir back home...) So I took the advice of fellow blogger (Christopher) and sang loud and unabashed!  The lesson?  Don’t be afraid and don’t put yourself in a box.  If you want to be in fine arts, then give it a shot!

I have only just begun practicing for this fall’s production, and I can already say that I am having a blast.  I can’t go into details about the play—I don’t want to ruin the experience for you—but I am extremely excited to be a part of such a dynamic (and hilarious) production.  Be sure to come and watch PCC’s production of H.M.S. Pinafore this Thanksgiving—and don’t forget to bring a date!

Although this was posted in 2011, the link to Ruddigore is the 2016 rendition. Enjoy!
